Visual Arts Preview: Look for zing in small places
The Dwelling (2014 - 2017) was a roving curatorial project which transformed host houses and spaces across the city to exhibit works by 17 emerging regional artists in one-night, pop-up parties. Growing up, house shows and DIY art openings were my entry point in to the arts, but as a newcomer to Charlotte I (Kathleen) felt like the arts' social scene was largely sequestered to private galleries, festivals and museums.
By matching a featured visual artist to a volunteer host house, we could create an introductory channel for artists outside the established gallery scene to meet with curators and potential collectors in a stimulating environment. We purposefully gave guests very little information outside of the artist's work - each invite included the address to a stranger's home and what time to show up. This strategic barrier to entry tapped into the type of openness and flexibility required to attend, host and organize the project.
